Communicating about ratios
The Coyotes have won 8 of their first 20 soccer games. If this
continues, how many games would you expect them to win
out of 30 games? Explain your thinking.
Preston’s Solution
I realized this was a ratio problem and I
assumed that the team’s winning ratio would
stay the same.
■
I set up a proportion in which the first value
8 : 20 =
: 30
was wins and the second was total games.
I like ratio tables, so I used one to solve the
problem.
It was hard to figure out what to multiply 20 by
Wins
8
4
12
to get 30, so I divided 8 and 20 by 2 to get 4
Games

10

and 10 and then I multiplied both terms by 3.
÷ 2
x 3
This answer is reasonable, since if they
In 30 games, they would probably win 12.
played 40 games, they would win 16, and
12 is between 8 and 16.
