indicates a “yes” –if Moses followed his rule and a “no” if Moses did not.

Response Requirements:
At the end of the last period, if Moses has 6 “yes” –he can play on the computer for 5
minutes.
Thinning the System
Moses’ rule stayed the same, but he reviewed his contract every two days.
Response Requirements:
At the end of the last period on the second day, if Moses has 12 “yes” –he can play on the
computer with Jimmy for 10 minutes.
Criterion for Reduction
When Moses gets all 12 “yes” for 2 consecutive days, the system will be further thinned.
Moses then reviewed his contract every 5 days –on Friday.
Response Requirements:
At the beginning of the last period on Friday, if Moses has 28 “yes” –he can go to ½ of
th
grade. If he gets 30 “yes” –he can stay in gym the whole period.

Guidelines Followed:
1. Several different contracts were used to make the system very concrete for
Moses.
2. Approximations of the target response are initially rewarded and therefore the
student gains access to the backup reinforcer rather quickly and easily.
3. Advancement to each level is contingent on Moses’ hand-raising behavior. A
criterion is set at each level.
4. At each level the requirements are gradually increased; however, the potency
or the rewards are also increased (that is, the rewards get better as the work
gets harder).
5. The skill is mastered first and then the schedule for the contract is thinned.
The contract is reviewed less frequently only when Moses has mastered hand
raising.
