Generalization:
The presence of an r following a vowel robs the sound from the vowel before it. When a
precedes r, the r usually says its letter name with the a being silent as in the word art.
When long vowels or vowel teams precede r, they are not as clear either as in care/chair.
Some long vowel words that are r-controlled are pronounced alike but are spelled
differently and have different meanings, such as pair/pare. These are called homophones.
