SVUSD – Grade 2
Lesson 24
R Influenced u
Generalization:
The presence of an r following a vowel robs the sound from the vowel before it. When u
precedes r, the r usually says its letter name with the u being silent as in the words hurt
and cure. The letters –ear sometimes stand for the vowel sound you hear in learn;
students commonly misspell these –ear words with –ure spellings.
