SVUSD – Grade 2
Lesson 6
Consonant Blends with S (-sk-, sm-, sn-, sp-, -st-)
Generalization:
A blend is a spelling unit composed of two or three consonants that retain their identity
when pronounced. When the letter s is followed by the consonants k, m, n, p, or t, blend
the sounds for the letters –sk-, sm-, sn-, sp-, -st-. When the blend is said, the individual
sounds can still be heard. Because the letters are tightly bound, it is difficult to segment
them into individual phonemes.
