SVUSD – Grade 2
Lesson 13
R Influenced e
Generalization:
The presence of an r following a vowel robs the sound from the vowel before it. When e
precedes r, the r usually says its letter sound with the e being silent as in the word her.
When long vowels or vowel teams precede r, they are not as clear either as in hear and
near. Some long vowel words that are r-controlled are pronounced alike but are spelled
differently and have different meanings, such as dear/deer. There are called
homophones. Some long vowel words that are r-controlled have the same spelling but
different sounds such are tear/tear. They are called homographs.
