SVUSD – Grade 2
Lesson 2
Words with –mp, -nd, -nk, -ng
Generalization:
Preconsonantal nasals, -mp, -nd, -nk, -ng often combine with another consonant at the
end of the word. This subtle letter-sound combination is due to air passing through the
nasal cavity in the mouth, eg. the /m/ in bump or the /n/ in sink. In pronunciation of
preconsonatal nasal, it is as if the second consonant dominated and absorbs the nasal.
Students often omit them in their spelling because they do not hear them.
