SVUSD – Grade 2
Lesson 5
Consonant R Blends (br-,dr-,tr-,gr-,fr-)
Generalization:
A blend is a spelling unit composed of two or three consonants that retain their identity
when pronounced. When the letters br-, dr-, tr-, pr-, gr-, fr- come together in a word,
blend the sounds for the letters. When the blend is said, the individual sounds can still be
heard. Because the letters are tightly bound, it is difficult to segment them into individual
phonemes.
