SVUSD – Grade 2
Lesson 16
R Blends/R Influenced i
Generalization:
A blend is a spelling unit composed of two or three consonants that retain their identity
when pronounced such as in r blends. The presence of an r following a vowel robs the
sound from the vowel before it. When i precedes r, the r usually says its letter name with
the i being silent as in the word fir. When the r precedes an i in a CVCe pattern, the
vowel is long as in fire.
