SVUSD – Grade 2
Lesson 4
Initial Consonant l Blends
Generalization:
When the letters bl,cl,fl,gl,sl, and pl come together in a word, blend the sounds for the
letters. A blend is a spelling unit composed of 2 or 3 consonants that retain their identify
when pronounced. The word blend contains 2 blends: bl and nd. When the blend is said,
the individual sounds can still be heard. Because the letters are tightly bound, it is
difficult to segment them into individual phonemes.
