Magnetic Tape and Cartridge Technical Requirements for TC-675R Reporting
Magnetic Tape and Cartridge
Technical Requirements for TC-675R Reporting
Basic Requirements
The Utah Employers Annual Reconciliation form TC-96R and the Transmittal form TC-679A
must accompany the magnetic tape or cartridge. The data can be written on a ½ inch
magnetic tape in the unpacked mode on 9-track tape, on single-reel files or it can be written
on an IBM 3480 or compatible cartridge tape in the uncompressed mode on 18-track car-
tridge tape, on single-reel files. Multiple-reel tapes are not acceptable.
External Label
Each magnetic media file must have an external label that shows: 1) transmitter’s name,
2) tax year being reported, and 3) whether the file contains test, original or corrected data.
The following information is also required if the file is on a tape or a cartridge: 1) record
length (275 or 276), 2) character set (EBCDIC or ASCII-1), 3) block size, 4) tape density, and
5) the tape number if it has an internal label.
Internal Labels
The Tax Commission accepts non-labeled and labeled tapes. If a labeled tape is used, it
must be IBM OS/VS STANDARD header and trailer labels. The tape number of the labeled
tapes must be printed on the external label and listed on the transmittal form TC-679A.
Labels cannot contain security encoded bytes.
The internal labels must be 17 characters and the first character cannot be numeric. On the
TC-675R tape, first level, the label must say TC-675R; the remainder of the label is your
choice.
The file sequence number, located on the internal label, must be equal to ‘1’ since there is
only one file on the tape. If the sequence number points to a different file location other
than one the computer system will not be able to find the file and we will send the tape
back to you for correction. This has been a common problem with transmitters who pre-
pared multiple tapes in order to report this information to different states.
Character Sets
The acceptable character sets for TC-675R reporting are EBCDIC and ASCII. If ASCII is
used, it must be ASCII-1. The Tax Commission cannot accept ASCII-2. Lowercase letters
are not acceptable on magnetic media.
Logical Record Length
Each record must be a fixed length of 200 characters.
Tape Density
The acceptable recording densities for tapes are 1600 (PE) or 6250 (GCR) characters per
inch (CPI) and for cartridges the density is 37,871 (CPI), non-compressed.
Block Size
The acceptable blocking factor is 32,600.
