descriptions for a number of varied tasks
t hat mu st be per f o rmed re gul arly or
p e r i o d i c a l l y. They may be written, or they
may exist only in someone’s mind. A staff
member may not always be certain of the
exact responsibilities assigned to a position.
The church may never have arrived at clear-
cut decisions re g a rding expectations for the
position. The job may have grown with the
person or position over a period of years
with assignments added or assumed fro m
time to time. A problem may develop when a
f o rmer staff mem ber leaves and a new
person comes into the assignment. A written
job description is an organized summary of
the d uties, tasks, respo nsibilities, an d
accountability involved in a staff position.
The job description should be re v i e w e d
annually and, when a change in personnel
occurs, re-tailored to fit the new situation.
