Pumpkin Glyph Lesson Plan - Grade Level K-1 Page 2

Explain that this is a glyph, because we can tell a story about each person
by using the legend (what you wrote on the board). What is a legend? A
legend can be used to interpret a graph. Use one of the students as an
example to tell a story. Ask a student to describe what they know about
the “living glyph” based on the legend. Thank your “living glyphs” for
helping and have them return to their seats.
2) Instead of putting a collection of information into a line, bar, or pie graph
(may wish to have an example of each), we are going to create a glyph
with data, just as demonstrated. Because we (will be visiting/have visited)
Tweite's Pumpkin Patch, we will be making pumpkin glyphs.
3) Now to create the pumpkin glyph. Using the pumpkin template/legend
worksheet, help the students with the first step to demonstrate how to
tackle each portion of the legend. If they seem confused help them with
the next portion of the legend as well. Be sure to circulate through the
classroom checking for understanding.
*Feel free to create a different legend to personalize it to your class.
4) There are several ways you can go about displaying the students work,
while checking for uderstanding.
Place students pumpkins (cut out) on a piece of tagboard with a
number under each. On another tagboard:
??Mystery Pumpkin??
Can you find my pumpkin?
Clues:
-Number of stripes = number of letters in my name
-Eyes = same color as my eyes
-Nose = triangle for boy, circle for girl
-Teeth = number of teeth I've lost
-Stem = my favorite color
Give students paper with a list of girls and boys names in class and a
number of spaces equal to number of students (pumpkins). Students
can guess who created each pumpkin.
Have kids hand their pumpkin in (names or initials hidden or a code
number given). Redistribute the pumpkin glyphs, making sure no
student has their own. Have each student write about what they know
about the person based on their pumpkin glyph. Can they guess who it
is?
