Sixth Grade Everyday Mathematics
1 1
Much of what you learned in the first years of Everyday Mathematics served as basic
training in mathematics and its uses. In fourth and fifth grades, you built on this training
and studied more sophisticated mathematics. This year, you will study new ideas—
some of which your parents and older siblings may not have learned until high
school. The authors, along with many other people, believe that sixth graders today
can learn and do more mathematics than was thought possible 10 or 20 years ago.
Here are a few topics that you will discuss in Sixth Grade Everyday Mathematics:
Practice and improve your number sense, measure sense, and
estimation skills.
Review and extend your arithmetic, calculator, and thinking skills by working with
fractions, decimals, percents, large and small numbers, and negative numbers.
Continue your study of variables, expressions, equations, and other topics
in algebra.
Expand your understanding of geometry, with a focus on compass-and-straightedge
constructions, transformations of figures, and volumes of 3-dimensional figures.
Explore probability and statistics.
Carry out projects that investigate the uses of mathematics outside the classroom.
A Student Reference Book is included in the Sixth Grade Everyday Mathematics
program. This resource book allows you to look up and review information on topics
covered in mathematics both this year and in years past. The Student Reference Book
also includes the rules of popular mathematical games; a glossary of mathematical
terms; and reference information, such as tables of measures, fraction-decimal-percent
conversion tables, and place-value charts. (Some of this information also appears at the
back of your journal.)
This year’s activities will help you appreciate the beauty and usefulness of
mathematics. The authors hope you will enjoy Sixth Grade Everyday Mathematics.
Most importantly, we want you to become more skilled at using mathematics so that
you may better understand the world in which you live.
