Ions
When atoms lose or gain
electrons, they become ions.
– Cations are positive
and are
formed by elements on the left
side of the periodic chart.
– Anions are negative
and are
formed by elements on the
right side of the periodic chart.
Symbols for Ions
• The number of protons in the nucleus
determines the symbol used for an ion.
• The element’s symbol is followed by a
superscript number and a sign that shows the
charge on the ion in electron charge units.
– If the ionic charge is one unit, the number is often

omitted, e.g. Na
is the symbol for a sodium ion.
