Some people believe that since information is available on the Internet, it
is not necessary for young people to attend schools. Do you agree with this
assumption or not.
With the prevalence of the Internet, a great variety of information is now
available to people. Many of them are acquiring knowledge from it, and
some say that in this way, schools are no longer necessary. I totally disagree
with this opinion because the Internet learning still has many defects despite
its merits.
As we all know, the Internet learning has the flexibility to study in any
convenient location and at a personal speed and intensity. The courses are
available at virtually any time or location and thus are accessible to a far
broader range of students.
However, the Internet learning has its weaknesses that only traditional
schooling can make up. First of all, there is very little social contact. The
Internet learning has traditionally had the disadvantage of lack of
interactivity, and although now the teachers and students are able to interact
in real time and to access institutions' resources more broadly and rapidly,
there is still the feeling of passivity. Distance learning is still considered by
some academic administrators a second-rate mode of education, to be
resorted to only when campus-based study is not possible.
Secondly, when a course is presented to students outside the usual
classroom environment, it demands a significant level of maturity and
commitment from the students. Some courses or programs demand
additional support such as library resources, counseling, etc. In addition,
some students need the psychological reinforcement of the traditional
classroom. There are even some students who need help in setting the pace.
The knowledge gained from the Internet lacks the flexibility to respond to
students' unexpected insights or reactions.
All in all, traditional schools provide the students with a systematic syllabus,
experienced teachers, and wild social activities. It is and will still be a
necessary educational place for the learners.
