RUG AND
LCOHOL
BUSE
It is the policy of the Irvington Board of Education that the use of drugs, unless prescribed by a physician, or
alcohol is prohibited by any student in school, on school property, on the way to and from school or at any
school sponsored event or function. The use of drugs or alcohol is a violation of the NJ State Law.
The Board of Education recognizes that a pupil’s abuse of harmful substances seriously impedes that pupil’s
education and threatens the welfare of the entire school community. The Board is committed to the prevention
of substance abuse and the rehabilitation of substance abusers by educational means, but will take the necessary
and appropriate steps to protect the school community from harm and from exposure to harmful substances.
Accordingly, the Board will establish and maintain a comprehensive substance abuse intervention, prevention,
and treatment referral program.
If a staff member suspects that a student is exhibiting the behavior of someone who is under the influence,
he/she will be sent to the medical office and be required to undergo outside testing.

To that end the Board will:

establish procedures to assist students with drug or alcohol related problems.
2. Cooperate with community resources that are involved in combating substance abuse.
3. Cooperate with law enforcement agencies to eliminate the availability and use of illegal drugs and
alcohol in our schools.
