Section 1.1 - Introduction
On
January
14, 2009, New Mexico will begin another Personal Income Tax (PIT) filing
season. Thanks to all electronic filers for making
2008
tax season a success. Tax and
Revenue Department (TRD) welcomes first-time electronic filers.
TRD strives to
continue to simplify the process of filing FEDSTATE e lectronic personal income tax
returns for all software developers, New Mexico taxpayers, filers and practitioners.
As part of New Mexico’s commitment to highest-quality customer service, TRD has set a
goal to process all electronic returns within 10 days of receipt. This means TRD should
have a refund issued within 10 days of filing if the return showing a refund due is error-
free and not intercepted for payment of outstanding liabilities.
TRD will continue to offer its Refund Express program, for electronic deposit of refund
directly taxpayer a checking or savings bank account. Refund Express will reduce the
process time for receiving a refund to 7 days or less.
TRD will continue to offer Direct Debit for taxpayers who choose to have tax owed, to be
electronically deducted from the taxpayer checking or savings account and deposited in
the NM Tax and Revenue Department account.
This guide is intended to provide software developers with information needed to capture
and format all required data fields for transmission of a New Mexico Personal Income
Tax Return for tax year 2008. In addition to this publication, New Mexico provides a
2008 Handbook for FEDSTATE Electronic Filing of Personal Income Tax Returns, which
provides filers/preparers and transmitters with information for filing a New Mexico return
through the Fed/State e-file Program.
TRD looks forward to working with tax software developers that offer New Mexico
taxpayers an efficient tax product for filing New Mexico Personal Income Tax returns.
