Non-Statutory Guidance 2012
Section 1 - Curriculum Planning
Planning for RE through project-based / integrated learning
Recommendations to ensure challenge, continuity and progression:
If a school decides to incorporate RE into project-based / integrated learning it
needs to be able to ensure that the requirements of the Kent Agreed Syllabus are
met – in terms of both content and concepts as well as through skill development.
The school needs to make sure that the time allocation for RE (approximately 5%
time) and the amount of time studying Christianity and other religions reflect the
expectations of the Kent Agreed Syllabus. Some aspects of the RE curriculum may
need to be taught discretely in order to meet these requirements.
The school also needs to be sure that clear RE learning objectives/outcomes are
planned for. These need to be at an appropriate level for those involved – to provide
sufficient support and challenge. The statutory level descriptors can help teachers
here. Appropriate tasks that enthuse and engage pupils in their learning need to be
set in order to allow for the learning objectives/outcomes to be met.
