.—If the fatality rate on rural roads in a

State, for the most recent 2-year period for

which data is available, is more than the me-

dian fatality rate for rural roads among all

States for such 2-year period, the State shall be

required to demonstrate, in the subsequent
8
State strategic highway safety plan of the
9
State, strategies to address fatalities and
10
achieve safety improvements on high risk rural
11
roads.’’.

(B) reduce the number or severity of acci-

dents involving commercial motor vehicles.

with State transportation departments and units of

local government.
